And because we just can't get enough of Karadzic around here...

A translation of an interview in the Bosnian magazine, Slobodna Bosna with an SDS official. At the end of the interview he says that Richard Holbrooke promised that Mladic and Karadzic would never be brought to the Hague in lieu of their giving up their positions (Commander of the RS Army and President).

What is to be made of these accusations? Do they have any validity to them? Or are they just an attempt to make Holbrooke and by extension, the US look bad? And at the sametime throw a "red herring" into the debate over where Mladic and Karadzic are, and why they are not yet in custody?

The allegation that Mladic and Karadzic were promised they'd never be caught has been around all along, it's not a new allegation.

I don't know the origin of the allegation, I don't know if the intention of it even matters at this late date.

The U.S. wasn't the only foreign nation that impacted events in the Balkans during the 1990s. France, Britain, Austria, Russia, Greece and various other countries had some level of involvement in the region and could have exacted such a promise, or backed it up.

Huge ineptitude has been part of the 'hunt' for these guys. Anyone can listen to military radio channels for example, noisy approaches, heavy handed searches just for show.

I think continuing the search with no results, in an inept way is more damaging than any allegation of safe haven for these guys could possibly be.
