Good People In A Time of Evil

I don't know if you believe in fate, destiny, or simply mere coinsidence, but twice today I happened to randomly come across Svetlana Broz's (yes, Tito's grandaughter), book, "Good people in a Time of Evil."

Therefore, I think now is as good as a time as ever to feature the book on my blog.

The book is a testiment to those ordinary people who risked being ostracize, or even at times, risked their own lives to help their fellow man escape from danger. Beyond just being a testiment to some ordinary people who performed extraordinary tasks, it is also a testiment of multi-ethnic cooperation. It is the story of Bosniaks who helped Croats, Croats who helped Serbs, and Serbs who helped Bosniaks, and so on and so on. It is a bold refutation of the argument used by ultra nationalists that Bosnians can not get along, and that they are "destined" for war and hatred for now until the end of times.

Excerpts from the book (and some of these excerpts do include very graphic descriptions of war crimes & atrocities) can be found here and here .

Well, unfortunately, my mom is not in that book, and she deserves credit for all the good she did during the war.

This is a very heavy book to read. I'm glad someone wrote it even if it doesn't have everyone that belongs in it.

There is probably never going to be a book that can tell every individual story of courage and heroism that took place during the war.

Daniel, maybe your mom can write a book about her experiences; or submit them to an NGO that records acts of goodness that people did during the war.
