Article: Can Bosnia's Peace Survive?

From TIME Europe:

Excerpt:
Between them (Dodik and Silajdzic), the two former moderates have cranked up the heat for Bosnia's upcoming general elections, scheduled for Oct. 1, to a level not seen since the war ended, alarming international officials who oversee the country and ordinary citizens who fear a return to violence. "These men are feeding off each other. They are not real nationalists, but they are using it to get elected. This is our catastrophe," says Senad Pecanin, editor of the Sarajevo weekly Dani

Speaking to Time, the Serb Republic's President, Dragan Cavic, struck a more conciliatory note. He said the idea of a referendum calling for the secession of the Serb Republic was "crazy, suicide," but added that dissolving the entity's borders unilaterally would lead to "a crisis that I cannot imagine." He warned: "Enough blood has been spilled."

I think the idea of two (virutally) automomous statelets in the first place, tied together by a very weak federal system was a recipe for furture disaster in the first place. However given the current situation and potential flair up of hostilities, I agree with Cavic.
I do think that the entire country will be better served by a stronger central government and police force.

Good intelligent stuff from Dejan who is often seen (and welcomed I think) on other former Yugoslav republics tv as well.

Again, the future of Bosnia. Who is to say, really? Hand on heart I dont think any Bosnian politician from whichever background truly knows what is going to happen.

Shaina this is something which has momentarily disapeared from the Bosnian agenda - a good thing probably in light of the elctions:

The international court - Bosnia against Serbia. The International Institute for Balkan studies in Ljubljana says that international and Serbian statesmen are claiming that Bosnia will drop the case against Serbia.

I dont know about the validity of this opinion but it was re-reported as a snipit in the Serbian press (not the gutter press, or at least I didnt read it in the gutter press).

Peace will survive!

People are tired of conflicts and they realize that the best way to deal with political aspirations is to use "political means".

What's going to happen in the future (aka: 15-20 years from now) is hard to say, because Serb Radical Party is comprised of radical lunatics who spread hatred and islamophobia in Bosnia. Hopefully they don't come to power!

So, for now, peace will survive!

You are completely wrong, dead wrong. First of all, the entire country would be better served with united (one) police force, because criminals come into Federation and do their crime there, and then they flee to Serb part of Bosnia and vice versa. And the federal police cannot catch them, because Republika Srpska has different police system. So we need one police, it's the requirement for entering European Union.

We need stronger central government, it's the requirement for entering European Union. Stronger central government will mean unity among Bosnian people and will unite separated institutions of power, it will bring all parties to the table.

Absolutely agree. NO MORE WARS! Bosnia needs stronger economy, people need money, so they can buy their children ice-cream, so they can eat meat more often etc, people need good economy, not a war.

Please read what I said again.

I did say that Bosnia should have a strong central government and a centralized police force:

I do think that the entire country will be better served by a stronger central government and police force."

I also mentioned that I thought that the idea of two seperate entries in the first place was not a good idea.

However, I'm worried that legally disolving the two entries right now, would cause nothing but problems.

Just as I'm worried that the provocative statements made by Dodik that the RS should seek independence are causing a great deal of problems.

What is the position of Zlatko Lagumdzija and the SDP regarding the current situation ?

I went on the SDP website, but it is only in Bosnian.

Srebrenica Massacre:
I completely agree with you about the economy. I think helping rebuild the Bosnian economy is absolutely essential. Unfortunately unemployment and other economic problems are still quit rapid.
