I found this interview to be incredibly insightful; Hemon discusses the differences between the Balkan and American literary scene, the differences between the Balkan and American nationalism and some of difficulties and cultural adjustments immigrants face. He also talks at length comparing Chicago (I live in a suburb of Chicago) to Sarajevo.
The interview is from 1999, but it is still very relevant today.
